About A Handful of Blessings

What A Handful of Blessings is for, who writes it, how claims are checked, and where to write when we get something wrong.

Start here

This is a blog and nothing more complicated than that. Nothing is deleted once it is up, so the archive is the full record, written to the standard of the line under the logo, Count what you have.

Most of what is written about gratitude and faith is written by people who have never had to live with the results. A Handful of Blessings is the opposite arrangement, and that is the whole idea behind it.

The topics

  • Gratitude Practice. Daily habits and journal methods for counting blessings, including the weeks when the list feels thin.
  • Prayer and Devotion. Forms, rhythms and what a consistent prayer practice actually involves, across traditions and temperaments.
  • Faith and Doubt. Questions that arise in any sincere practice, answered honestly rather than reassuringly.
  • Mindful Living. Attention, presence and the small acts that accumulate into something worth calling a practice.
  • Giving and Service. The connection between blessing others and feeling blessed, and the practical shape of both.
  • Daily Rituals. Morning routines, evening reflections and weekly anchors that hold a practice in place without demanding too much time.

Each piece sits under exactly one heading. Readers arriving from search mostly land in gratitude practice, prayer and devotion and faith and doubt, so those sections get looked after first.

Where we stop

There are questions we routinely decline. Anything that depends on facts only you can see, and anything where being wrong would cost you real money on our say so.

The method

Every piece here starts with a question somebody actually asked. If we cannot answer it from experience or from a source we can name, it does not get published.

Nobody has editorial input except the people whose names are on the articles. That includes anyone who has ever sent us money.

How claims get checked and how money is disclosed is written down separately, on the editorial policy page.

About the name

People ask about the name. There is rarely a good story behind a domain, and there is not one here either. A Handful of Blessings was available, it was short enough to say out loud, and it has been the name long enough now that changing it would be more confusing than keeping it.

The people

You can see who wrote what, and you can see everything else they wrote. That is deliberate, because it makes a bad article expensive for the person who wrote it.

Martha Osei, Founder and gratitude practitioner. Martha started a blessings journal after a difficult year and has written about the practice every week since, including the weeks it did not work. She founded this site because most gratitude content glosses over the hard parts, and she wanted somewhere that did not.

Joel Whitaker, Faith and mindfulness writer. Joel comes from an interfaith household and writes about practices that hold up across traditions without flattening the differences between them. He is careful about claims, generous with worked examples, and honest when a practice did not deliver what was promised.

Clara Nunes, Wellbeing and ritual writer. Clara focuses on habits that take under five minutes: the kind that accumulate quietly rather than demanding a dramatic change in how you live. She has a low tolerance for wellness advice that sounds good but breaks down on a Tuesday morning in November.
