Frequently Asked Questions

Short answers to the questions readers send A Handful of Blessings most often, plus where to write if yours is not covered here.

What is a blessings journal and how is it different from a gratitude journal?

They overlap significantly. A blessings journal tends to emphasise what has been given to you, often with a spiritual framing, while a gratitude journal is more broadly about noticing what is good. In practice, the difference is less important than whether you keep writing after the first enthusiastic week.

Do I need to be religious to use this site?

No. The writers here come from different backgrounds and some of what we cover is explicitly spiritual, some is not. The index covers topics by category so you can follow the threads that are relevant to your practice without encountering ones that are not.

How long does it take to feel the benefit of a gratitude practice?

Most of the research suggests eight weeks of daily practice produces measurable changes in how people report their wellbeing. What the research does not tell you is that most people stop after eleven days. The harder question is not how long it takes but how to get past the second week.

What is the difference between prayer and meditation?

Meditation is usually described as listening or attending, prayer as speaking or directing attention toward something. In practice many people do both inside a single session and do not find the distinction useful. What matters more is consistency than classification.

Is gratitude the same as positive thinking?

No, and the difference matters. Positive thinking asks you to reframe negatives as positives. Gratitude asks you to notice what is genuinely present and good, without denying what is difficult. A gratitude practice that requires you to pretend things are fine usually collapses under pressure.

Do you take payment to recommend any products or services?

Some outbound links on this site are commercial and that is set out in our editorial policy. The wording of what we write does not change because of a commercial relationship, and we say so in print.

How often do you publish?

When a piece is ready. We prefer to take longer over an article than publish something that repeats what is already widely said. The full archive is always available, and pieces are updated with a dated note when the advice changes.
