How to Keep a Prayer Journal When You Are Not a Writer

You want to pray more honestly, but your thoughts scatter after a minute and you forget what you meant to bring before God.

You want to pray more honestly, but your thoughts scatter after a minute and you forget what you meant to bring before God. A prayer journal can hold those thoughts in place, yet many people never start one because they assume it requires beautiful writing, a quiet hour and a leather bound notebook.

It requires none of those. A prayer journal is simply a place where prayer slows down long enough to be noticed. Five minutes, a cheap notebook and a pen are enough, and the people who keep one for years are often the ones who write the least.

What a prayer journal is, and what it is not

A prayer journal is a written record of conversation with God. Some entries are full letters. Many are a single line: a name, a worry, a word of thanks. Over time it becomes a map of what you carried and how it changed.

It is not a diary of your day, though daily events will appear in it. It is not a performance for anyone else, and it is not a test of how spiritual you are. If your entry for Tuesday reads "Tired. Help me with Mum. Thank you for the sunlight at lunch," that is a complete prayer.

People in many traditions have done something similar for centuries. Monks kept commonplace books of scripture and reflection. Many Christians write out prayers alongside Bible reading. Some Jewish families keep lists for the names spoken during prayers for healing. The form varies, the purpose is the same: attention.

Choosing a notebook and a time

Choose a notebook you are not afraid to ruin. An A5 lined exercise book costs very little and lies flat. A beautiful journal you feel you must fill perfectly will sit empty on the shelf.

Then choose a time that already exists in your day. A few that work well:

  • With morning coffee, before the phone, for five to ten minutes.
  • At lunch, if mornings are a scramble with children or a commute.
  • Before bed, as a gentle close to the day. If you already pray the Examen at night, a journal fits naturally beside it.

Keep the notebook and pen in the same spot every day, on the kitchen table or the bedside table, so you do not have to look for them. If you are still finding your way with prayer at all, our guide to building a prayer practice when you do not know where to start is a gentle place to begin.

A simple structure for each entry

A blank page can be intimidating. A light structure helps. One that many people find useful follows four short movements, sometimes remembered by the letters ACTS:

  1. Adoration. One line about who God is to you today. "You are patient with me."
  2. Confession. One honest line about where you fell short. No need for detail you would not want to reread.
  3. Thanksgiving. Two or three specific things. "The call from Ana. The bus arriving on time in the rain."
  4. Supplication. What you ask, for yourself and for others. Write names.

That is often six to eight lines in total and takes about five minutes. On some days one section will run long and the others will be a word each. That is fine.

A second approach, if structure feels stiff, is to write one letter beginning "Dear God" and stop when you run out of words. Or copy out a verse that caught you and write a single sentence underneath it. Many people find the Psalms especially helpful here, and our piece on praying the Psalms when your own words run out offers ways to use them.

Keeping a prayer list that stays alive

One of the most useful parts of a prayer journal is a running list of people and situations. Reserve the back few pages for it. Use three columns: the date, the name or need, and a space left blank for later.

When something changes, a job found, a test result, a hard conversation finally had, go back and write the date and a word in the third column. After six months, this page often becomes the most moving part of the whole book. You see prayers answered in ways you expected, ways you did not, and some still waiting.

Praying for others deserves its own care. If you would like to think more about what it means to hold someone else before God, see what intercessory prayer asks of you.

Why I would not write every day

Much advice on prayer journaling insists on a daily entry, with streaks and trackers. I understand the appeal, but I think it can quietly turn prayer into a chore you are failing at.

Prayer itself can be daily. The writing does not have to be. Some people do best writing three times a week and praying silently on the other days. Others write long entries on Sunday and short lines midweek. What matters is that the journal remains an invitation and not an obligation. When you miss a week, do not write a page of apology. Open to a fresh page, write the date, and begin again with one honest sentence.

A good test: if you start to dread the notebook, reduce what you ask of it. Fewer lines, fewer days, but keep the thread.

Rereading what you wrote

Set aside 20 minutes once a month, perhaps on the first Sunday, to read back over the past weeks. Notice recurring worries, patterns of thanks, and names that keep appearing. Underline anything that surprises you.

Rereading often brings a quiet kind of gratitude. Problems that felt enormous in February look smaller by May. That perspective is one of the gifts of writing prayer down at all.

It can also show you where to pray differently. If the same anxious line appears on twelve pages in a row, that worry may need more than a written sentence. Perhaps a conversation with a friend, a pastor or a counsellor, or a longer time of silence. A journal does not replace those things, but it often points to them more honestly than memory does.

Frequently asked questions

What do you write in a prayer journal?

You can write thanks, confessions, requests and simple honest thoughts addressed to God. Many people use a short structure like adoration, confession, thanksgiving and supplication. Others write a letter, copy a verse, or keep a list of names to pray for.

How do you start a prayer journal for beginners?

Pick an inexpensive notebook, set aside the same five minutes each day, and write one or two lines of prayer each time. Keep the notebook in the same place so it is easy to reach. Add a prayer list in the back pages once the habit feels natural.

Is a prayer journal the same as a gratitude journal?

They overlap but are not the same. A gratitude journal focuses mainly on noticing good things, while a prayer journal is addressed to God and can include confession, requests and lament as well as thanks. Many people combine the two in one notebook.
